Description

Sheltered Latin 1 is a course designed to provide the learner with a strong foundation in the Latin language from which the language can be further mastered. The course will introduce the first three declensions of nouns, six verb tenses in the active, indicative, and include more advanced grammatical concepts such as noun/adjective agreement and relative clauses. The course will cover the history of Rome from the rule of the Monarchy to the beginning of the Republic, and will also delve into cultural and mythological themes.

Objectives

After completing Sheltered Latin 1, students will be able to:

1) acquire English vocabulary through derivatives that use Latin roots

2) diagram single and multi-clausal Latin sentences

3) translate single and multi-clausal Latin sentences

4) compose original thoughts in Latin


Course Instructor

Matthew Bavone

Matthew Bavone has been a teacher of Classical and Modern languages for the past 11 years, with a focus in Latin. He is currently in his fourth year at St. Luke’s School in New Canaan, CT, teaching Latin 1, 2, 2 Honors and AP. As an undergraduate, he attended Assumption College where he received his bachelor's degree in Classical Languages with a minor in both French and Spanish. He went on to receive a master's degree in Educational Technology from George Washington University. As a high school teacher, Matthew has been a pioneer in Blended and Flex learning, integrating technology in pedagogically sound ways in order to benefit his students.
